BELT RESPIRATOR

Typical Number in Hospital: 1 Cost Bands: 2 References: 2

Alternating or intermittent pressures applied to the trunk may augment or replace the patient's own respiratory effort. This type of respirator consists of a flexible airtight bag wrapped around the chest which is repeatedly inflated by hand squeezing of a second bag, or is inflated by a machine. These can be useful if access to the airways is prevented by the procedure being undertaken. Belt respirators are sometimes called Pinkerton cuirass ventilators.
