A semi-automatic pure tone audiometer may be used to eliminate the operator element in hearing testing. A Bekesy audiometer or Bekesy attachment for a conventional audiometer causes the tone to step automatically from one frequency to the next (or glide continuously through the frequency range), and the amplitude to increase and decrease, controlled by the patient pressing a button to indicate when he can hear the tones. The resulting audiogram is plotted automatically on an X-Y recorder. If the test is repeated using a bleeping rather than a continuous tone, further diagnostic information can be obtained from differences between the two results.
