This is a general term for a suction apparatus intended for drawing off mucus, saliva, blood, vomit, etc. into a reservoir. Various types of aspirator may be found listed under suction machine, suction unit, piped vacuum service, etc. They are used extensively in operating theatres and wards to drain operation sites and to clear the airways to prevent choking.
