In paediatric anaesthesia it is common to use a breathing circuit of the Jackson-Rees T-piece configuration in which a small breathing bag is squeezed by the hand while occluding the open end between the finger and thumb. This provides a partial rebreathing of the gases contained in the connecting tubing. Electromechanical devices exist to provide the occlusion automatically and these are sometimes called artificial thumbs.
