An ingenious condenser-humidifier is sometimes used during anaesthesia or artificial ventilation, which consists of a series of wire meshes in a metal housing. As the patient exhales, water vapour is condensed on the relatively cool wire mesh. During subsequent inhalation the vapour is re-evaporated and delivered to the lungs. They do not work very well and increase the dead space of the breathing circuit.
