One would expect this term to be applied to devices for oxygenating the blood as used during cardiac bypass operations. However, the term has been coined to apply to forced ventilation of the lungs and in particular those machines which act by applying pressure to the chest externally such as the cabinet- type ventilator ('iron lung'), the cuirass or the Pinkerton cuirass ventilators. Such machines are no longer commonly found in acute hospitals.
