For X-ray visualization of the larger arteries (e.g. coronary, cerebral, renal, femoral, aorta, etc.) it is usual to inject a bolus of contrast medium from a high-pressure syringe, into the artery itself. The progress of the contrast medium through the arterial system is then observed by fluoroscopy, usually backed- up by X-ray films produced by cine, or in a rapid film changer. The X-ray set may be a general set plus accessories, or may be dedicated equipment (single and bi-plane).
The apparatus used for this is an X-ray set with a fluoroscopic screen coupled to a video imaging system. A special high-pressure pump is also required to inject the dye in a short time to provide an identifiable bolus which will pass through the vessels.
