Apart from the obvious meaning of this word it is used for a device fitted to teletherapy apparatus in the radiotherapy department which fixes the spacing between the X-ray source and the patient. It mounts on to the X-ray or gamma head and may have parallel steel walls, or conical lead-lined walls, with or without a Perspex end-piece. The device will also define the width of the treatment beam.
Such devices are found in radiotherapy departments.
